Gianluca Ferraro
Architect · International Tattoo Artist · Black & Grey Realism
Gianluca Ferraro is an Italian architect and international tattoo artist based in Naples, specializing in Black & Grey Realism and highly detailed, custom-designed tattoo projects.
His work focuses particularly on classical sculpture, Greek and Roman mythology, architecture, realistic portraiture, and large-scale compositions, designed to integrate naturally with the anatomy, volume, and movement of the body.
Born in Naples in 1984, Gianluca developed a strong connection with drawing and the visual arts from an early age. He attended art school before graduating with highest honors in Architecture from the University of Naples Federico II.
In 2006, he met architect Fabrizio Carola and travelled to Mali, where he took part in the development and realization of an architectural project in Bamako. This experience, followed by several years of collaboration, helped shape a design methodology based on proportion, balance, structure, spatial awareness, and attention to detail — principles that Gianluca progressively brought into his approach to tattooing.
After exploring different tattoo styles during the early years of his career, he focused his artistic research on Black & Grey Realism, gradually developing an approach in which each tattoo is conceived as an individual project designed specifically for the person wearing it.
His background in architecture and the visual arts has a profound influence on his work. Classical statues and sculpture, architectural elements, portraiture, iconography, and mythology are researched and combined within cohesive compositions, with particular attention to depth, light, proportion, and the continuity of the artwork across the body.
From Story to Design
The creative process often begins long before the drawing itself.
Gianluca prefers to understand the story a client wants to tell, exploring its meaning and emotional dimension before translating it into imagery. Research therefore goes beyond simply finding aesthetically suitable subjects: expressions, poses, lighting, perspective, and atmosphere are selected according to their ability to visually communicate the emotions and meaning behind the project.
An important part of this process comes from his personal photographic archive, developed through years of travel and artistic research. Statues, works of art, architecture, and other subjects are sometimes photographed personally, allowing Gianluca to select specific perspectives, lighting conditions, and details.
These photographs can become original references and the starting point for highly personalized compositions that cannot easily be replicated through the use of commonly available online imagery.
Each project is developed in dialogue with the client through research and consultation. When necessary, different visual and compositional possibilities are explored before defining the final direction. The objective is not simply to approve an image, but to reach a considered and confident decision before the tattooing process begins.
This methodology becomes particularly important in complex and large-scale projects, including full sleeves and extended compositions, where multiple subjects must become part of a single coherent artwork while following the anatomy, volume, and natural movement of the body.
International Career
Throughout his career, Gianluca has participated in international tattoo conventions and events, receiving several awards in the Black & Grey and Large Black & Grey categories and developing professional relationships with influential figures in the evolution of contemporary Black & Grey tattooing.
Particularly significant have been his relationships with José Lopez, founder of Lowrider Tattoo Studios and an internationally recognized figure in Black & Grey tattooing, and Jun Cha, the Los Angeles-based artist internationally recognized for his Fine Art approach to Black & Grey tattooing.
What began through tattooing and artistic exchange developed over the years into much deeper professional and personal relationships. Gianluca has had numerous opportunities to meet, travel, work, and share experiences with both artists across Europe, Asia, and the United States, becoming part of the Lowrider Family and developing an artistic dialogue that has played an important role in his journey.
His international career has brought him into contact with clients from around the world and has included work for numerous professional football players, athletes, and public figures, alongside international collectors and private clients.
His journey has developed across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, through conventions, collaborations, private tattoo sessions, and custom projects.
Alongside tattooing, Gianluca continues to explore photography, drawing, painting, and artistic research, maintaining a multidisciplinary approach in which art, architecture, photography, and the human body become part of the same creative process.
Today, Gianluca Ferraro focuses primarily on selected custom projects and private tattoo sessions, working from Naples and during periodic international sessions.
